MILAN (Reuters) -- France and Italy are considering a potential tie-up between automakers PSA/Peugeot-Citroen and Fiat, Milano Finanza newspaper said on Saturday.

The report comes just days after Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne said the Italian company needed to find a partner to survive the crisis besetting the car sector.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and French President Nicolas Sarkozy have tackled the issue of a possible tie-up,Milano Finanza said, citing sources close to Berlusconi's office.

The issue coincides with Berlusconi's office examining possible aid to the auto sector, it said.

Analysts have said a PSA-Fiat tie-up would make commercial sense since both have strong positions in small cars. They also have two joint ventures in commercial vehicles and minivans.

The companies combined made 6.2 million units last year, about the same as Volkswagen and Renault-Nissan.

The combined output would make Fiat-PSA the world's fourth-biggest automaker by production along with VW and Renault-Nissan after Toyota, General Motors and Ford Motor.

PSA has said it is not looking to add to its alliances but is willing to discuss deepening its existing relationships.

Fiat's Marchionne said in an interview with Automotive News Europe that he expected the auto industry to consolidate in the next two years, leaving six players to compete globally.

A PSA tie-up could be touched on when John Elkann, chairman of holding company IFI, Fiat's controlling shareholder, meets Berlusconi on Wednesday, the paper said.

A spokesman for Berlusconi's office said there was no official comment on the report. Fiat and PSA spokesman had no immediate comment.

А, ну вот 4-м SUV в семействе Mitsubishi Outlander XL, Citroen C-Crosser, Peugeot 4007 станет Alfa Romeo.

мне кажется, это был единственный вменяемый вариант союза. Имхо, это гораздо лучше, чем покупка платофрм у опеля...

MILAN (Reuters) -- Fiat's admission that its car business needs a partner to survive the economic crisis is as much a way to put pressure on the Italian government as it is an invitation to potential buyers.
Unlike Europe's other two major car-producing countries -- France and Germany -- Italy has yet to come out with a plan to support its struggling car industry.
Since Fiat's admission last week, the media has cited France's PSA/Peugeot-Citroen and Germany's BMW as potential partners, but industry watchers do not see a deal any time soon.
"There will be no partner next year," Morgan Stanley's Adam Jonas said. "Everybody has way too much on their plate."
As falling car sales have put thousands of jobs at risk, France and Germany have pledged financial aid for their car industries. France's president has offered 1,000 euros to every driver who trades in an old vehicle for a less-polluting one.
Calls on Italy's government to act have grown louder as Fiat, the country's biggest industrial group, has halted production and sent thousands of workers home on reduced pay.
Even the archbishop of Turin, Fiat's hometown, has added his voice to the calls.
Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne's published comments last week about the group's car business being too small to survive was seen by analysts as a warning directed towards Rome.
"His message is that if it does not get any help from the government, it will be forced to take drastic measures next year," an industry analyst said on condition of anonymity.
One such measure could be the closing of two plants in southern Italy at the cost of more than 6,000 jobs.
"If the market gets worse, Fiat will burn a lot of cash and this would lead to a restructuring of its operations, especially in Italy," a second industry analyst said.
The two plants -- one in Sicily and the other near Naples -- are a thorn in Fiat's side because they cost more to run than those it has in other countries, the analyst said.
Meeting in Rome
So far, Italy's government has only said it was looking at renewing fiscal incentives to buy new, less-polluting cars.
It has also said any further aid would have to be done in coordination with other member states of the European Union.
But business daily Milano Finanza has reported that Italy had spoken to France about a possible deal between Fiat and PSA.
It and Corriere della Sera have also said a meeting between the head of the holding company that controls Fiat and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi this week would review the idea.

A source close to the holding company denied the reports, saying the meeting on Monday had been with an adviser and did not concern cars.
No deal in 2009

Although a deal -- with PSA or another -- was likely in the long run, analysts do not see it next year.
Carmakers are too busy cutting costs and have little money to spare for an acquisition, they said.
An even bigger barrier to a merger would be the inevitable plant closures and job losses that would follow when the merged company started to cut costs.
"This is diametrically opposed to what governments want -- which is to preserve as many jobs as possible in a time of crisis," said Morgan Stanley's Jonas.
Job losses are a major obstacle to a deal between Fiat and PSA given the overlaps in their businesses - both specialize in small- and medium-sized cars for the mass market.
Fiat would not have that problem with BMW, a premium brand with no presence in the lower end of the market.
That deal would give BMW a portfolio of cheap, mass-market cars and Fiat an extension of its premium range and access to technology.
But even this idea has its problems.
The last big deal between a mass-market carmaker and a premium brand was Daimler's takeover of Chrysler -- a costly combination that quickly unraveled.
An outright sale of the car business would also see the foreign buyer confront politicians and union leaders who have found it hard to let big companies fall into foreign hands.
Government opposition saw AT&T and America Movil abandon their bid for Telecom Italia, while unions scuppered Air France-KLM's offer for Alitalia.
An alternative could be to form a partnership like the cross-shareholding between Renault and Nissan, said UniCredit's Sven Kreitmair.
"Fiat most likely wants to avoid being completely in French hands and Peugeot wants to avoid being in Italian hands," he said in a report about a possible deal with PSA.
UBS Warburg's Philippe Houchois was not convinced, however.
"A joint venture is difficult to manage," he said. "He (Marchionne) would prefer to sell 100 percent of it."))))

Honda CEO Takeo Fukui on Wednesday said his company has been forced to cancel the next-generation Acura NSX sports car due to poor economic conditions. The news came during a speech about the automaker’s revised financial forecast. Plans to bring the Acura brand to Japan have also been shelved permanently, the Nikkei news service has reported.


“The situation is worsening by the day, and there is no prospect for recovery, is our understanding,” Fukui told reporters.

The NSX was a much-anticipated V10-powered sports car in the late stages of development. Designed as a successor to the original model of the same name, the new NSX was slated to be launched as a 2010 model. The project was subject to multiple delays related to the vehicle’s exterior design, but those problems were recently overcome.

Fukui previously characterized the new NSX as “necessary for Honda.”

The company indicated its operating profits will be 180 billion yen ($2 billion), down 67 percent from the forecasted 550 billion yen. There’s even a chance, according to Reuters, the automaker will report a half-year operating loss — for the latter part of 2008. If that happens, it will be the the first time in at least 11 years. Also hurting the income forecast is the yen’s strength against the U.S. dollar, which further compounds the U.S. sales problem.

The debut of the Acura brand — originally U.S.-only — in Japan was originally planned for late 2008, but was recently delayed until 2010. Given the economic downturn, Honda said it decided to cancel the costly program all together.

Honda also announced it will cut production by 314,000 vehicles worldwide for the current fiscal year, according to Bloomberg. It also will eliminate about 1,200 temporary jobs in Japan.

Автоконцерн Fiat планирует на месяц приостановить работу 14 из 20 заводов в Италии. В результате около 48 тысяч работников будут отправлены в принудительный отпуск с сохранением части заработной платы.

Приостановка заводов связана со снижением спроса на новые автомобили концерна. За 11 месяцев текущего года Fiat реализовал 1,053 млн автомобилей, что на 5,6% меньше, чем за аналогичный период прошлого года. ©

Кроме, как дурацкое LOL, ничего на а ум и не приходит.
Более глупой откорячки, пожалуй, и не встречал)))) Даже Фердинанд Бугатьевич Пьех с трансмиссией своего Вайерона около трех лет протрахался - крутящий не могли переварить. Поговаривали даже о закрытии проекта. Первоначально собирались ставить типа Ф1, пототом, вроде, на ПДК переметнулись. Представляю, какое клацание при переключении на двухтонном агрегате с таким моментом, да за лимон зелени))) "Народ", мягко говоря, не понял бы)))) Но, Восток так просто, нахрапом не возмешь))))
