Вродь кроме 6МКПП не ставили ничего.......
Хотя на рынке видел 166 с 2.0 Твин и 6(!!!!)МКПП....... Долго спорили, что таких не ставили на Твин, но она такая была убитая, что я полагаю туда сами как-то втулили 6 передач....
Так что не исключено, что коробка может быть от 164, моторы ж вроде идентичны, тока объем на 500 куб. меньше.

Коробки нового образца (примерно с 1999 года) на 166 TS шли 6-ступенчитые

ALFA 166: GEARBOXES
The Alfa 166 can be fitted with two types of gearbox to make the most of the generous performances delivered by its five power units. The first is a 31 kgm (310 Nm) manual unit in 5 and 6-speed versions. The five speed version is fitted to the 2.0 Twin Spark 16 valve and 2.5 V624 valve engines. The other is fitted to the 2.4 JTD, the 2.0 turbo and 3.0 V6 24 valve units.
The second gearbox is a 30 kgm Sportronic electronic automatic transmission. This new design is fitted to the 2.5 and 3.0 V6 24 valve versions.
The manual gearbox
The 31 kgm gearbox offers reduced dimensions (transverse and longitudinal) and excellent change quality. The external, dual cable system eliminates all vibration and gear lever judder.
Gearbox configuration is transverse, with two shafts connected in a cascade system, and a differential. Both versions (5 and 6-speed) are fitted with a mechanism to prevent involuntary engagement of reverse and to increase precision when engaging fifth speed.
The system requires much less engagement effort. This has been achieved by adopting a Borg-Warner type synchroniser ring system on all speeds. A triple cone synchroniser is added for first and second speeds and a double cone synchroniser for third, i.e. the speeds most commonly used in town traffic. The gearbox is completed by a Viton Thermic Compensator. This system compensates for different amounts of thermal expansion experienced by the gearbox and main shaft to allow quiet, very slick engagement (at any temperature). This characteristic is enhanced by an internal gear control system with four selection planes (reverse is on the fourth plane) with a speed positioner located centrally and mounted on bearings.
The 6-speed gearbox is fitted to the 2.4 JTD, 2.0 turbo and 3.0 V6 engines. The sixth speed is not an overdrive on the two powerful 6-cylinder petrol units. This solution allows transmission ratios to be closely spaced so that rotation speeds and the generous torque can be handled very accurately to ensure more lively performance coupled with greater driving satisfaction and comfort.
On the 2.4 JTD, top speed is achieved in fifth or sixth according to the solution chosen..
Sportronic Electronic Automatic Transmission
The Sportronic Electronic Automatic Transmission is an innovative 4-speed transmission (electronically controlled) that allows drivers to choose between fully power-assisted self-adapted control and manual control.
In the first instance the system monitors the way in which the driver uses certain controls for a short period. It then decides on the most effective gear-speed sequence to suit these factors (and also car condition and type of route). This is achieved by comparing measured data with memorised software.
When used in manual mode, the Sportronic system lets the driver choose the speed to engage in order to ensure typically Alfa Romeo driver satisfaction.
Self-adaptive mode
From a technical viewpoint, an automatic transmission is the best complement to a power unit because it allows engine power to be exploited to the full while protecting against jerkiness – and also offering good driving comfort. If the electronic management system is self-adaptive, as in the case of the Alfa 166, the gearbox is "smart", i.e. it can select programs independently and automatically adapt to the driver’s style and type of route.
The Sportronic Electronic Automatic Transmission considers many more variables than a conventional electronic transmission. The Sportronic unit also processes them continuously and is able to identify route conditions (uphill gradient, descent, bends) and driving style (sporty or relaxed). The new system considers not only the instantaneous value of these parameters but also the way they change with time.
On the basis of input received, the control unit firstly decides which of the twenty available programs to adopt and then runs its internal program to determine the speed to be selected.
The operation of the Sportronic Electronic Automatic Transmission can be better appreciated by examining some examples.
Around town or in a traffic queue: if the car frequently starts off slowly and then stops due to the type of road, the system identifies the fact that the car is travelling in a queue or around town. It therefore engages the "stop and go" program automatically, which keeps second speed continually engaged instead of changing continually from first to second. This reduces fuel consumption and increases passenger comfort.
At constant speed: if the accelerator is kept in the same position for at least 10 seconds, the self-adaptive management automatically switches to a higher gear while maintaining speed unchanged. This prevents pointless fuel wastage and reduced comfort due to over-high engine rpm. Sporty drive: if accelerator load changes quickly and frequently, the system identifies a sporty driving style. It automatically adjusts the program to ensure an equal rate of reaction during gear changes and forces the engine to work at high speeds. If the accelerator is kicked down to the floor continually, the extra sporty program cuts in immediately to ensure the same reactions, but in an accentuated manner.
On bends: with conventional automatic transmissions, when the foot is taken off the accelerator pedal on the approach to a bend, a higher speed is immediately engaged which gives rise to the unpleasant sensation of the transmission being in neutral with the engine running at a low speed.
This reaction also makes for poor acceleration when coming out of the bend. The Sportronic electronic automatic transmission, however, analyses the speed with which the driver’s foot is taken off the accelerator and identifies the need to maintain the same speed engaged (typical situation when approaching a bend). But there is more. If the brake pedal is pressed when the car approaches the bend, the system activates the sports program; this changes down through the gears and enhances engine braking action. After the approach stage, ABS sensors detect the bend itself due to the difference in rotation between wheels on both sides (right and left) of the car. The Sportronic leaves the same speed engaged to ensure the car is effectively balanced and allow it to accelerate smartly out of the bend.
On a downhill or uphill gradient: the driver removes his foot from the accelerator to slow down at the beginning of a descent. In this case too, the system maintains the speed engaged or changes down to increase engine braking. Conversely, when the accelerator is pressed but speed does not increase, the self-adaptive transmission ‘understands’ that the car is about to drive uphill or that the car is subject to a higher load than usual (heavily laden or pulling a trailer). To overcome the load resistance, the system selects a program that engages low gears and forces the engine to work at high speeds.
Setting off on roads with poor grip: the Sportronic electronic automatic transmission is also able to counter wheel spin when driving over loose ground. It sets off in second gear and then changes up in rapid sequence while preventing engine rpm from rising too quickly to restrict the amount of drive torque.
Cold start: a specific cold start program is engaged that performs gear changes at a higher rpm than normal, thus increasing exhaust gas volume and making the power unit warm up more quickly. This program heats the catalytic converter more quickly and thus reduces pollution during this crucial stage.
Manual mode
The Sportronic system also allows manual gear changes. This mode allows the driver to drive in a sporty manner even under the few circumstances when a fully automatic transmission does not allow the car’s attributes to be exploited to the full (e.g.,when travelling at speed over a mixed route with a variety of bends and continual changes in gradient).
The driver can select manual mode by moving the gear lever into a special gate located alongside the automatic selection gate. In this position, the lever can perform only two movements: forward for higher speeds and backwards to change down. Each gear change is shown on the display. When the vehicle stops, the device sets itself to first gear, ready to set off again.
Even when used manually, the Sportronic electronic automatic transmission maintains certain advantages typical of a smart transmission. For example, it allows gear changes to be made without interrupting power delivery. Power is actually interrupted by the control unit, but so quickly that it cannot be detected. It also cuts in automatically to prevent any possibility of error. The gear may be changed, for example, only if engine rpm is at the appropriate level.


The gearboxes are accurate, fast and silent. All versions in the range come with a sixth non-overdrive gear. The 3.0 V6 24V is available in a Sportronic version, i.e. with a sophisticated self-adaptive automatic transmission that allows a choice between fully power assisted and sequential manual modes.
