Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2004

Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2004: some of the highlights of this year’s event

Cernobbio/Munich. Once more this year, the quality of the vehicles signed up for the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este reaches outstanding heights. In the 75th year of its existence, the world’s most historic Concours d’Elegance for cars, to be held on 24th and 25th April, will present dream models from every era. The event takes place in Cernobbio on Lake Como, in the parkland surrounding the famous Hotel Villa d’Este. On Sunday, 25th April, the show is also open to the general public in the adjacent grounds of Villa Erba.

The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is currently the only surviving traditional Concours d’Elegance to span an arc from classic dream cars to the latest concept models and prototypes.

In this anniversary year of the Concorso d’Eleganza, visitors can look forward to a fantastic cross-section of design and automotive history covering the years between 1920 and 1970. The regulations are clear-cut: all vehicles are subject to the strict criteria of the FIVA (Féderation Internationale des Vehicules Anciens). Models are presented either in their original state or in restored condition according to the regulations and approved FIVA categories.

Participants from eleven countries will present their classics for scrutiny by an international jury of specialists. This year, some 50 cars will be vying for the prestigious Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este (Best of Show by Referendum at Villa d’Este), Trofeo BMW Group (Best of Show by the Jury) and Trofeo BMW Italia (By Public Referendum at Villa Erba). Here are some of the main attractions:

Cars celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2004:
ALFA ROMEO BAT 7, 1954, Prototype, Carrozzeria Bertone, 1900 cc
This Alfa Romeo BAT 7 with its flamboyant design by Scaglione (Bertone) had its premiere at the 1954 Turin Motor Show. The car makes its appearance alongside the BAT 5 and BAT 9 prototypes. These three design icons have lost none of their fascination to this day. The Alfa Romeo BAT 7 prototype chimes in perfectly with the concept of the Concorso d’Eleganza: a forward-looking prototype from the 1950s, it stands up to comparison with contemporary concepts also on display as part of the Concorso.

ALFA ROMEO 1900 SSZ, 1954, Carrozzeria Zagato, 1900 cc
Another birthday car that awaits us at Villa d’Este is the Alfa Romeo 1900 SSZ 1954 with bodywork by Zagato. This special construction made an incisive impression in its day both on the race track and at the Concours d’Elegance. The model we are presenting at the Concorso is being specially shipped from California to Italy for the occasion. It will augment the range of Zagato models exhibited at Lake Como to mark the 85th company anniversary of Carrozzeria Zagato.
The car from furthest afield:
FIAT 1200 STANGUELLINI, 1957, Prototype, Carrozzeria Bertone, 1200 cc
In 1957, the Turin Motor Show was also the venue for the unveiling of this prototype by Bertone. The Fiat model cannot disguise its kinship with the ALFA ROMEO BAT 7, also hailing as it does from the Scaglione design drawing board. The history of the prototype records that Bertone sold the car to a buyer in Argentina, where it was eventually discovered and fully restored. This model goes on public show for the first time in almost 50 years at Villa d’Este.

The car owned by Gianni Agnelli – returning home for the first time in over 40 years:
FERRARI 375 America, 1954, Coupé, Pininfarina, 4523cc, 12-cylinder, ex-Gianni Agnelli

Gianni Agnelli adored beautiful cars. He had this Ferrari 375 America built to his own design by Pininfarina in 1954 – another model celebrating its half-century this year. The rectangular radiator grille typical of “Agnelli cars”, the glass roof and the striking rear end lent the 375 America its distinctive appearance. The motoring world was last able to admire the car in its original roadgoing condition about 20 years ago in the USA. Following a two-year restoration to its original state, the car went on show at Pebble Beach last year where it earned the maximum 100 points in its category. We are proud to be able to present, for the first time in Europe, this model owned by an American collector from Houston.

The car not to be missed outside Villa Sarasin:
ROLLS-ROYCE 40 / 50 HP, SILVER GHOST, 1924, 7428 cc, Torpedo Million Guiet
This Torpedo 1924 with bodywork by Million Guiet marked its debut at the 1924 Paris Motor Show. In 1926, the renowned car designer Ettore Bugatti from Molsheim (F) acquired the car, and it remained in family ownership until 1966. In 1970 it added another famous owner to its record – Comte Frederic Chandon (Moet et Chandon), who sold the Rolls-Royce to Kuniko Alesi, the wife of Jean Alesi, in September last year. Besides this magnificent specimen, Kuniko and Jean Alesi will also be bringing to this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este a 1932 Rolls-Royce Phantom II featuring a Barker body.
Special exhibits marking further anniversaries

Competing in the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2004 will be two classics that took the Coppa d’Oro – the highest distinction at Villa d’Este – back in 1934 and 1949. In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Concorso, further winning models of years past will also be on show (hors concours).

The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este not only celebrates its own anniversary in 2004: it will also pay tribute to the design achievements of two leading European carmakers. In a special exhibition to mark 75 years of BMW automobile production, the design lines of Germany’s premium car manufacturer will be traced from the past all the way into the present. A further special exhibition will be devoted to Italian designers Zagato. At the RETROSPECTIVE ZAGATO 1919 – 2004, held in the grounds of Villa Erba on the Sunday, the creators of the legendary “double bubble” roof design and many dream bodies for chassis from such brands as Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Aston-Martin and Fiat celebrate their 85th anniversary.

Rolls-Royce 100EX at the Concorso d´Eleganza

The Concorso will also pay homage to 100 years of Rolls-Royce, with a number of spectacular car designs from the past of this exclusive British brand on view in the grounds of Villa d’Este and Villa Erba. On display during the weekend of the Concorso: The Rolls-Royce 100EX, first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show 2004. This special model has been designed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Chairman and CEO, Tony Gott, describes the automobile: “In wanting to mark this very special year we decided that there would be no better way than to revive the EX motor cars philosophy and produce something unique to show around the world. “
Based on a lightweight aluminium spaceframe, the 100EX is an open-top, four-seat, two-door drophead and is the first experimental motor car to be produced by Rolls-Royce since the launch of the all-new Phantom in January 2003.

Concept cars reveal the design contours of the future
With its prizes for concept cars and prototypes, this Concours d’Elegance is the only one in the world to return to the historical roots of the very first Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este held in 1929.
In order to breathe new life into the old tradition of the automotive “beauty contest” and to span the arc from the past (classic cars) through the present and into the future (concept

cars/prototypes), the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2004 will, in addition to the 50 or so classic cars on show, present for the third time a line-up of contemporary concept cars and prototypes. These models will be eligible for the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este Design Award and the BMW Group Design Award. In keeping with the time-honoured tradition, the winners will be decided on the basis of votes cast by the attending public. The organizers will announce the participating concept cars and prototypes following the Geneva Motor Show.
