At first, when SAAB and Lancia made the deal for the platform, Lancia engineers were talking about independent rear suspension, but SAAB chose to ask a modified version of the platform (in the back) to take the suspension bridge drive (the Lancia engineers were greatly perplexed), the same solution adopted for the old 900.
SAAB's need for a beam rear axle may have perplexed the Italians but they needed the durability. The 9000 axle was heavily revised from the 900 series, using the same fore and aft Watts links but with a bent panhard rod to lower the leverage point for more neutral left to right transitions. SAAB's may handle like tanks but they are also more durable in harsh conditions. The SAAB front suspension was more neutral than Alfa's negative camber set up, which eats tires (but only when driven in a straight line!) but grips the road much more convincingly than a SAAB.
SAAB installed an experimental V8 in their 9000 but elected to fit the turbo 4 only until an ill advised decision to fit a 3.0 V6 from GM Europe.
