The Alfa Romeo-BMW fight resumed where it had finished last year. The two Manufacturers dominated one race apiece in the opening meeting of the 2004 FIA European Touring Car Championship. In the first race the AutoDelta trio - Augusto Farfus, Gabriele Tarquini and Fabrizio Giovanardi - took command, and then had a tough fight for the lead. The Brazilian youngster claimed his first ETCC win on his very debut in Touring Car competition, from his team-mates Tarquini and Giovanardi. And this was also the first win for a non-European driver since the Championship's revival in 2001.

In the second race, the BMWs of Jцrg and Dirk Mьller took the lead at the start. And the race nearly turned to be a BMW private affair when Tarquini and Giovanardi eliminated each other in a collision at the Ascari. In the second part of the race Jцrg Mьller created a gap, while a technical problem forced Dirk Mьller to slow down, and he was passed by Andy Priaulx and Farfus.

With an astonishing debut in the Championship, the 20-years old Farfus is now leading the Drivers' Championship. However the results of both races remain provisional, pending technical scrutineering on his Alfa Romeo 156 S2000.

SEAT had a good start of the season, scoring points in both races; Tom Coronel claimed two wins in the Independents Trophy at the wheel of his Carly Motors BMW.

Race 1 report from Monza

Safety-car in on the opening lap - At the start the two BMWs of Dirk and Jцrg Mьller jumped from the second row to the lead, chased by Augusto Farfus. Salvatore Tavano, placed in 11th position, stalled the engine and was violently hit from behind by Carl Rosenblad's BMW. Both cars were badly damaged, and the Race Director called the safety-car in, while Tavano was taken to the medical centre for a check-up. He was soon dismissed.

Alfa drivers' attack after the green flag - The race restarted at the end of the third lap. Farfus attacked J. Mьller at the first chicane, then he and Tarquini both passed the German at the braking of Lesmo. This action cost J. Mьller two further positions, in benefit of Priaulx and Giovanardi. The latter overtook the Briton at the Ascari, forming an Alfa Romeo trio in chase of D. Mьller. Rangoni retired on the third lap after a collision with Rydell.

Three Alfa cars in the lead - On lap 5, Farfus took the lead, overtaking D. Mьller at the first chicane. During the same lap, Dirk lost second position to Tarquini (at Lesmo) and the third to Giovanardi (at Ascari). Zanardi was fighting for ninth position with the three SEATs of Genй, Rydell and Morbidelli.

Tarquini and Giovanardi in close fight - On lap 6, J. Mьller overtook Priaulx for fith position, while Giovanardi dived inside Tarquini at the Parabolica. The two Alfa cars clashed, and Giovanardi managed to steal second place from his team-mate. Asch's Ford Focus retired with clutch problems. Zanardi moved up to ninth, overtaking Rydell and Genй. Giovanardi was shown a black and white flag, due to his manoeuvre. On lap 7 Tarquini recovered second place, only to lose it again to Giovanardi on the following lap.

Farfus leads an Alfa Romeo 1-2-3 - On the last lap, Tarquini managed to pass Giovanardi for good. Farfus took the chequered flag first, with a very narrow margin ahead of his team-mate. D. Mьller led home a BMW quartet, followed by J. Mьller, Priaulx and Coronel, who won the Independents' race. Diefenbacher was classified eight, and scored one point for SEAT. Zanardi finished ninth, from Genй, Rydell and Morbidelli. Proteam Motorsport rookie D'Aste finished 14th overall and second of the Independents.

Race 2 report from Monza

Hara-kiri for Tarquini and Giovanardi - Diefenbacher's SEAT was on pole on the reverse grid. Coronel made the best start and turned first into the chicane, followed by Diefenbacher and D. Mьller. The latter overtook Diefenbacher at Lesmo, moving up to second. Giovanardi and Tarquini were in a close fight while chasing the leading pack, and when the field arrived at the Ascari they collided. Tarquini, on the inside, hit Giovanardi and crashed into the barriers; his team-mate went off in the gravel and rejoined at the back of the field. Zanardi, who was closely following them, spun in avoidance. Harrison also went off at the Parabolica, and remained stranded in the gravel. Before the end of the lap, J. Mьller jumped into second, overtaking both Diefenbacher and D. Mьller.

Four BMWs in the lead - On lap 2, J. Mьller took the lead, passing Coronel. Dirk Mьller and Diefenbacher were in a tough fight for third, which enabled Priaulx to pass the SEAT driver. Morbidelli retired after a collision with Rangoni. On lap 3, Coronel slipped down to fourth, having been passed by D. Mьller and Priaulx. On lap 4, Priaulx stole second place from D. Mьller. Farfus was quickly recovering, moving up to sixth, right behind Diefenbacher.

J. Mьller creates a gap - On lap 5, Priaulx and D. Mьller were fighting for the second position; Diefenbacher and Farfus were doing the same for the fifth. On lap 6, Farfus overtook Diefenbacher, then Coronel, and closed on to the Priaulx-D. Mьller pair. Giovanardi retired due to his accident with Tarquini. All this fighting helped J. Mьller to create a gap in the lead. Grunert retired with a broken driveshaft. On lap 7. D. Mьller was on the tail of Priaulx's car, when Farfus attacked them both. The Alfa and Dirk's BMW clashed at the exit of the La Roggia chicane, and the Brazilian moved up to third. Garcнa overtook Genй for seventh position.

Two SEATs in the points - In the two last laps, Farfus desperately tried to steal second position from Priaulx, but the Briton closed all the gaps and crossed the line 3.2 seconds behind race-winner J. Mьller. D. Mьller was classified fourth, despite a differential failure, followed by Coronel who won again the Independents' race. At the last corner, Diefenbacher recovered the sixth position from Garcнa, while Genй was classified eight. D'Aste obtained a brilliant ninth (second of the Independents), ahead of Zanardi, who overtook Rydell on the last lap.

FARFUS PENALISED IN BOTH THE MONZA RACES
Brazilian rookie Augusto Farfus has been given a 10-minute penalty in both the opening races of the 2004 FIA European Touring Car Championship, held in Monza on March 28th. The penalty has been decided today in Valencia by the Stewards of the Meeting, on the basis of the report of the technical checks made in Paris a few days after the event.

The #3 AutoDelta Alfa Romeo 156 S2000, driven by Farfus, was declared not to conform with Art. 263.9.1 of Appendix J of the International Sporting Code due to the position of the fixation points of the rotational points on the suspension part checked after the race.

In Monza Farfus had won the first race, and finished third in the second race, meaning that he was provisionally leading the Drivers’ Championship with 16 points, two ahead of BMW Team Deutschland’s Jцrg Mьller. Further to his penalty, Farfus’s team-mate and reigning ETCC champion Gabriele Tarquini inherited the first Monza race, while Jцrg Mьller is now leading the Championship with 15 points and a 3-point margin over BMW Team Great Britain’s Andy Priaulx and his own team-mate Dirk Mьller. The three of them will also be the only drivers carrying handicap weights in Valencia: 40 kg for Jцrg, 35 kg for Dirk and 25 kg for Priaulx.

“We did not appeal against the decision,” said AutoDelta team manager Monica Sipzs, explaining: “The non-conformity of the checked part was due a fabrication mistake, because we were in a hurry in order to finish the cars in time for the first meeting. As a matter of fact, in Monza, Mr. Jacques Berger of the FIA has checked other identical parts, and declared them conform; he also accepted the building solution of our suspension. The Stewards’ decision testifies that they have accepted our bona fide mistake, rather than punishing us for fraud.”

EUROPEAN TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIP: TWO MAGNIFICENT ONE - TWO - THREES FOR ALFA ROMEO AT VALENCIA

Alfa Romeo dominated its rivals (Bmw, Seat, Peugeot, Honda, Ford) at the Spanish circuit in Valencia, with three Alfa 156s taking the first three places in both races. In the first, Gabriele Tarquini finished ahead of Fabrizio Giovanardi and twenty year-old Brazilian driver Augusto Farfus; in the second, Giovanardi took first place ahead of his team companions Tarquini and Farfus in that order.

Thanks to these results Alfa Romeo leads the Manufacturers Championship ahead of Bmw and Seat, while Tarquini heads up the Drivers standings with a two-point lead over Giovanardi, followed by Bmw drivers J. Muller, D. Muller and Priaulx. Young Farfus lies in sixth place.

An unprecedented result thanks to a superbly competitive Alfa 156, also confirmed by Salvatore Tavano's (Team Oregon) two wins in the independent driver category. But then the previous day the three Autodelta Racing Team Alfa Romeo 156s had already literally dominated the field in the qualifying sessions.

An outstanding performance repeated on Sunday, April 18th. In fact in race 1 Augusto Farfus and Gabriele Tarquini's Alfa 156s got off to a fast start from the first row on the grid, followed by Fabrizio Giovanardi's Autodelta Alfa. At the first bend the three Autodelta drivers pulled ahead of Bmw drivers Priaulx, Dirk Muller and Garcia. In the second lap Giovanardi moved up into second place and then in the third took the lead ahead of his team mates, Tarquini and Farfus. The positions remained the same in the fourth lap and the three Autodelta Alfa 156s driven by Tarquini, Giovanardi and Farfus went on to take the chequered flag in that order. Behind the Alfa Romeo trio, the Bmw drivers Priaulx (at a distance of 5.809") and Dirk and Jorg Muller. A good performance too by Salvatore Tavano with his Alfa 156 GTA (Oregon Team) who finished eighth ahead of Zanardi's Bmw.

On the grid for the start of race 2, the positions of the first eight drivers in race 1 were reversed, with the Alfa 156s driven by Farfus, Giovanardi and Tarquini lined up in rows three and four. Already in the first lap Giovanardi and Tarquini pulled back three positions to lie in fourth and fifth place. Then at the end of the fourth lap the three Autodelta Alfa 156s took the lead and held it for the remaining laps, with Giovanardi, Tarquini and Farfus finishing ahead of the rest of the field for the second one - two - three of the day.

And lastly the Valencia circuit was also the scene of this season's second event in the European Alfa Challenge, two races with an international field limited to Alfa 147 GTA Cup cars. Dutch driver Tim Coronel drove to victory in race 1 and would also have won race 2 but for a 4-second penalty inflicted by the stewards (for a contact with Irish driver, Murray) that dropped him back to fourth place, leaving the victory to 20 year-old Simone Iacone. The latter now leads the standings ahead of two Dutch drivers, Bertram and Coronel.

The next appointment in the European Touring Car Championship will be at Magny-Cours in France on May 2nd.

Со следующего года чемпионат будет переименован в World Touring Car Championship
01.07.2004 NEXT YEAR Alfa Romeo are poised to race on the global stage ONCE MORE as the FIA announce the creation of the World Touring Car Championship
Yesterday, in Paris, the FIA World Motor Sport Council approved the new FIA World Touring Car Championship (“FIA WTCC”).

Up to six manufacturers are expected to join the proceedings. Alfa Romeo, BMW, SEAT, Peugeot, Honda and Ford are the likely protagonists, all of them are currently involved with the present European Touring Car Championship format.

The FIA is working with KSO Ltd as promoter of the Championship. KSO has been organising the FIA European Touring Car Championship since 2001.

The FIA World Touring Car Championship will be reserved for FIA Super 2000 cars and will award two FIA World titles, Drivers and Manufacturers.

“We are very grateful to the FIA for this great opportunity. The decision to upgrade the ETCC to the WTCC is the best reward for our efforts, this makes us very proud of the contribution we made towards relaunching touring car competition internationally,” Jacques Behar, Chairman of KSO, commented.

The creation of an FIA World Touring Car Championship was the logical consequence of the growth recorded in touring car racing since the FIA revived the European Championship (2001), and wrote new technical regulations (2002), which rapidly spread worldwide.

The FIA World Touring Car Championship joins the list of the two car World Championships already organised by the FIA: the Formula One World Championship and the FIA World Rally Championship.

The 2005 FIA World Touring Car Championship will consist of ten race meetings, two championship rounds will be raced at each meeting, giving a total of 20 rounds.

The FIA World Motor Sport Council also agreed the introduction of the HANS device in the championship, obligatory from January 1st, 2005.

Alfa Romeo have been heavily involved with the FIA European Touring Car Championship since its rebirth. Fabrizio Giovanardi was Driver's Champion in 2001 and 2002, while Gabriele Tarquini took the title last year to give them a clean sweep.

Alfa Romeo Nordauto took the Team's title in 2001, while the next year saw Alfa claim the reborn Manufacturer's prize.

The new FIA World Touring Car Championship is expected to give Alfa Romeo a global stage to perform on, a platform the justifiably deserve.
